Designing the Future: Applications of 3D Modeling

Webinar Overview
This webinar, which is part of the GNSA’s nursing innovation series, will provide an overview of 3D modeling including some examples of where it can be used within healthcare. The speaker will also explore programs you can use for 3D modeling and provide the audience with some examples for use of 3D modeling. Leave the webinar with a tip sheet with instructions for creating a box in Tinkercad and a list of programs and suggested resources for 3D modeling.
Objectives
- Describe 3D modeling and its uses.
- Compare use of 3D models in creating physical products as well as digital assets.

Rebecca Domead is a dedicated nurse with over 17 years of experience in various healthcare settings. Rebecca's journey in nursing has taken her through the fast-paced environment of the Emergency Room, Med-Surg, Telemetry, ICU, Hospital Clinical Education. With a passion for teaching and mentoring, she has also served as an Adjunct Clinical Instructor. Currently, Rebecca serves as an Administrative Nursing Supervisor at Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Rebecca holds a Master's degree in Nursing Education and is part of the inaugural class of the 2025 Doctor of Nursing Education program at The Ohio State University.
Recently, Rebecca pursued additional education in Biomedical Visualization from the University of Glasgow, where she gained valuable insights into the intersection of healthcare and technology. She also completed a Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Certificate program from Massachusetts Institute of Technology XPRO. With her diverse background, advanced education, and unwavering dedication to understanding the intersection of healthcare and technology, Rebecca continues to make significant contributions to the field of nursing and healthcare education.

This webinar will describe the process for developing, implementing, and evaluating a DEI Toolkit specifically for use in simulation programs. The content of the Toolkit will be discussed, including the purpose, glossary of terms and conceptual model with application to simulation scenarios, faculty self-assessment of DEI content knowledge, student evaluations of their experiences, and DEI resources for simulation.
Objectives:
- Discuss an approach to systematically integrate DEI Concepts into a simulation curriculum.
- Identify essential components of a DEI toolkit for simulation.
- Discuss a framework for guiding the development of simulation scenarios.

Joanne O. Duunderdale is an Assistant Professor teaching in simulation education at the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, Loyola University Chicago for the past 10 years. She teaches every aspect of simulation in undergraduate nursing education including: medical-surgical I & II, mental health, community, maternal/child, women's & older adult health, pediatrics, leadership and intra- and inter-professional simulation. Dr. Dunderdale has extensive experience creating simulation scenarios, facilitating simulation activities, and leading debriefing sessions. Her research interests are in simulation, transition to practice and Ignatian Pedagogy application in nursing simulation education. Dr. Dunderdale has over 30 years experience as a registered nurse and currently maintains a clinical practice in the emergency nursing setting.

Dr. Carol Kostovich is an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of Innovative Educational Strategies and Simulation in the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, Loyola University Chicago. In addition to teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, she oversees nursing simulation within the pre-licensure and graduate programs. Dr. Kostovich has over 25 years of teaching experience in higher education. She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing and a post-graduate certificate in Educational Research Methodology. Dr. Kostovich's research focuses on the phenomenon of nursing presence, creating psychologically safe spaces for students and patients and designing, implementing and evaluating innovative approaches to teaching. She is a certified healthcare simulation educator.

Virtual Reality in Distance-led Graduate Nursing Programs: The VR-NP Innovation Project

In Spring of 2023, faculty in an online advanced health assessment course embarked on an innovative project to integrate virtual reality simulation into the competency-based curriculum of a graduate nursing program. Students were given virtual reality headsets to use at home to complete weekly simulations to reinforce didactic content. This webinar will be presented by the recipients of the 2022 AACN Faculty Scholars Grant Program and will explore how to integrate virtual reality into an online graduate nursing program. Lessons learned will be shared along with implications for faculty, students, and technology staff.
Objectives:
- Describe the Virtual Reality Simulation to aid in competency-based online nurse practitioner curriculum (VR-NP) pilot innovation project.
- Examine ways virtual reality might be introduced to your nursing program.

Kelly Casler is an Associate Clinical Professor at The Ohio State University College of Nursing where she teaches in the Family Nurse Practitioner and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs. She also maintains a weekly clinical practice at The Healthcare Connection, an FQHC in Cincinnati. Kelly obtained her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in 2018 through the University of Kansas School of Nursing and completed both a BSN and MS in Nursing at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Her scholarship focuses on innovative nurse practitioner education, including virtual reality simulation and she is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Education (CHSE). Dr. Casler is also a proud U.S. Air Force spouse and mom to Caleb and Zach.

Kate Gawlik is an Associate Professor of Clinical Nursing, Director of Undergraduate Health and Wellness Academic Programming Director of the Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Wellness, and Project Manager for the Million Hearts® initiative at Ohio State University. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and the National Academies of Practice. She is a Family Nurse Practitioner and her areas of expertise are in wellness, parental burnout, cardiovascular prevention, and nursing education. She received the 2022 AACN’s Innovation Award for her work in nursing education and cardiovascular prevention. Her most recent work in wellness involved developing a new scale, the very first instrument on the globe to measure working parent burnout. She is the editor of four nursing textbooks.

Transitioning to competency-based education (CBE) requires a new way of teaching and learning. Leveraging technology and data collection can be critical for an effective transition. The Essentials Technology Work Group was charged to develop recommendations regarding the use of technology within academic nursing to support the adoption of CBE. Dr. Triola is the associate dean for educational informatics and an associate professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health, where he is also the founding director of the Institute for Innovations in Medical Education, known as IIME.
Dr. Triola’s research focuses on the disruptive effects of the present revolution in medical education, driven by technological advances, big data, and learning analytics. He has worked to create a continuously learning medical education system that includes computer-based learning tools and new ways to integrate electronic data into educational research.
Dr. Triola and IIME have been funded by the National Institutes of Health, including the Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems (IAIMS) Awards program, the National Science Foundation Advanced Learning Technologies program, the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, and the American Medical Association’s Accelerating Change in Medical Education program.
In previous roles at NYU Langone, Dr. Triola served as director of the Division of Educational Informatics within NYU School of Medicine; chief of the Section of Medical Informatics within the Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine; associate director of the Center for Health Information Preparedness, Department of Medicine; and director of research for advanced educational systems within the School of Medicine.
Janelle Sokolowich, Ph.D., MSN/Ed, RN

Janelle Sokolowich is the Academic Vice President and Dean of the Leavitt School of Health. She has been an academic leader for over a decade, having held various roles, including dean of academic operations, interim dean, and faculty. Her research includes the successful orientation of nursing faculty and intentional, focused academic support of culturally and linguistically diverse students. Dr. Sokolowich has presented nationally and internationally, highlighting the use of technology in the classroom, non-academic support strategies for high-risk students, and cultural inclusivity in the classroom.
